Founded In 1909
In 1909, Phillip Barney founded a small insurance company in San Diego. Shortly thereafter, Phillip's brother joined him, creating the lasting name of Barney & Barney. In a time when there was little to insure besides physical property, the Barney brothers grew the business by staying responsive to the needs of the community.
Mid-Century Growth and a Focus On New Talent
The steady growth of the firm in the 1930s and '40s, accelerated in the 1950s with the execution of Barney & Barney's perpetuation plan, designed to promote growth by bringing younger people into the partnership as equity owners. In the late '60s, Barney & Barney shifted from simply selling one insurance company's products to brokering business for several carriers.
Since then, the growth in professional liability and employee benefits has brought new opportunities to Barney & Barney, and we’ve continued to grow at a remarkable rate while never losing site of the importance of serving our clients.
Office Expansion and the Merger With Saylor & Hill Co.
The firm enjoyed consistent growth in the 1970s, '80s and 90s, before expanding aggressively in the early part of the 2000s.
In 2005, Barney & Barney expanded its Southern California reach by opening an office in Orange County, California.
In 2008, Barney & Barney again expanded by merging with Saylor & Hill Co. of the Bay Area.
Saylor & Hill Co. has been delivering risk management, insurance and employee benefits services from its headquarters in Oakland, California since 1933. With a reputation for delivering consistent, responsive and highly personalized service to clients, we recognized that merging was a perfect fit for both companies.
Harnessing the strength of our combined company, our offices work seamlessly together to provide clients with the best consulting and coverage available, across California and beyond.
Accelerated Growth as the Firm Turns 100
Barney & Barney has achieved remarkable growth in recent years, expanding our employee base and revenues exponentially -- an unusual feat for a century old company.
As the firm celebrates 100 years of doing business, we are proud of our legacy of serving the insurance needs of California's industries, and look forward to our next 100 years.
